Note: Even if you don't have a work-study award, jobs are available to all students at MSU.

Federal College Work-Study and State of Michigan Work-Study

  • Need-based
  • Funded by federal government or State of Michigan
  • Jobs are available both on and off campus with eligible employers
  • Students can use awards in community service jobs
  • Undergraduate (first or second bachelor's degree) or graduate student
  • Must be enrolled at least half time
  • U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen

  • Can receive funds from only one institution during a term, even if attending two colleges during the same term

Federal Supplemental Educational Grant (SEOG)

 

  • Need-based
  • Federally funded
  • Gift aid
  • Undergraduate (first bachelor's degree)
  • Must be enrolled full time
  • Either Michigan or out-state resident
  • U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen
Federal Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)
  • Need-based
  • Federally funded
  • Gift aid
  • $750 first year
  • $1300 second year

 

  • First or second year undergrad
  • Pell Grant recipient
  • Completed a rigorous high school program
  • Must be enrolled full time
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher at the end of first year in order to receive the second year grant
Federal National SMART Grant Program (SMART)
  • Need-based
  • Federally funded
  • Gift aid
  • up to $4000 first year
  • up to $4000 second year
  • Third or fourth year undergrad
  • Pell Grant recipient
  • U. S. Citizen
  • Must be enrolled full time
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Specific majors only
  • Take at least one qualifying course each semester

Michigan Competitive Scholarship (MCS)

 

  • Need-based
  • Funded by the State of Michigan
  • Tuition only
  • $1300 annual maximum
  • Maximum 10 semesters eligibility
  • Undergraduate (first bachelor's degree)
  • Amount on award letter assumes full-time enrollment; part-time enrollment reduces eligibility; less than half-time enrollment cancels eligibility
  • Michigan high school graduate & Michigan resident
  • U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen
  • Qualifying score on the ACT taken in high school
  • Maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA

Michigan Educational Opportunity Grant (MEOG)

  • Gift aid

Michigan Promise Scholarship (MPG)

Federal Stafford Loan (Subsidized)

  • New loans have a fixed interest rate of 6.8%
  • Repayment of principal and interest deferred while enrolled at least half time
  • Six month grace period before repayment of principal and interest begins

Parent Loans

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION ELIGIBILITY

Federal PLUS Loans

  • Non need-based
  • Federally administered
  • Parent borrows on behalf of dependent undergraduate student
  • Fixed interest rate 7.9% under Direct Loans
  • Interest begins accruing upon disbursement
  • Repayment of principal and interest begins 60 days after loan is fully disbursed
  • Dependent student enrolled at least half time
  • Parent must meet creditworthiness standards
  • Parent and student must be U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens
  • Parent must not be in default on a federal education loan or owe a refund on a federal student grant
  • Separate application (the Loan Application Form or "LAF") required
  • Completed promissory note required
